What size serving bowl for how many guests? Two small beat one large

Hands passing a medium serving bowl at a shared dinner table

A serving bowl of 25 to 30 cm is enough for four people; from six guests, two smaller bowls beat one large one. The reason is practical rather than aesthetic: two bowls travel round the table in both directions at once, so nobody waits, and they fit in a normal cupboard afterwards.

Guests Serving bowl Alternative
2-4 25-30 cm One is enough
5-6 30 cm Two of 25 cm
7-10 Two of 30 cm Three of 25 cm

A tray is a table

A sturdy tray with a raised rim turns a pouffe or ottoman into a stable surface in one move. That is worth knowing in a room where a coffee table would block the walkway: the tray comes out when you need it and disappears afterwards.

Heat, per material

Ceramic and metal generally handle a hot dish. Wooden and woven trays need a trivet under anything straight from the oven - the heat does not crack them but it does dry and lift the finish over time. Serving bowls are meant for the table rather than for cooking; only put one in the oven if the product explicitly says so.

Cleaning a wooden tray

Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Never soak it and never put it in the dishwasher: wood that has taken up water warps as it dries, and a warped tray does not sit flat again. Rub in a little neutral oil once or twice a year and it stays sound for years.

Composing the table

One focal point in the middle and the rest kept low. Above eye level, serving dishes and decoration get in the way of the conversation, which is the fastest way to make a generous table feel crowded.

Combine with bowls and table linen from the same range.
