With a corner sofa, choose a round or oval coffee table and size it to the longest side only - roughly two thirds of that length. A rectangular table fights the diagonal of the corner, and the leg nearest the angle ends up either unreachable or in the walkway.
Why rectangles fail here
A straight sofa and a rectangular table share the same lines, so they read as one block. A corner sofa introduces a diagonal, and a rectangle placed inside it leaves two awkward triangles of floor that no one can use. Worse, someone always sits at the corner itself, and from that seat a rectangular table is too far away on one side and too close on the other.
A round table solves both problems at once: every seat is the same distance from the edge, and there are no corners at shin height in the busiest part of the room.
Sizing table
| Longest side of the sofa | Round table | Oval alternative |
|---|---|---|
| 200 cm | 80-90 cm | 110 x 70 cm |
| 240 cm | 90-100 cm | 120 x 75 cm |
| 280 cm | 100-110 cm | 140 x 80 cm |
| 320 cm and up | Two smaller tables | 150 x 85 cm |
Measure only the longest arm. Adding both arms together gives a table so large that nobody can reach past it.
Keep the 40 cm gap
Leave around 40 cm between the sofa edge and the table on every side. On a corner sofa that distance is easy to lose at the angle, so check it there specifically - it is the seat people use most and the first place a table starts to feel in the way.
Two tables instead of one
On sofas from about 320 cm, two smaller tables usually beat one large one. You can slide one aside when people come over, and each half of the sofa gets its own surface. Choose two of the same family but different heights; identical pairs look showroomy.
On a rug
If the table stands on a rug, prefer a solid base or three legs. Four thin legs sink unevenly into high pile and the table rocks. And size the rug so the front legs of the whole corner sofa stand on it, not just one arm.
For the seat furthest from the table, add a side table at armrest height. On a corner sofa there is always one spot the coffee table cannot serve.
